Matthews, Colin (1946– )

English composer. He studied at Nottingham University and taught at Sussex University 1972–77. He worked with Deryck Cooke on the performing version of Mahler's tenth symphony and edited and issued several early works by Britten, whose assistant he was 1974–76. His output includes several Sonatas for orchestra; Night's Mask (1984), for soprano and chamber orchestra; and through the glass (1994), for ensemble.

He is the brother of English composer David Matthews.

Chamber

Ceres for nine players (1972), Rainbow Studies for piano and four wind (1978), three string quartets (1979, 1982, 1993), oboe quartet (1981).

Vocal

Five Sonnets: to Orpheus (texts by Rilke) for tenor and harp (1976), Shadows in the Water for tenor and piano (1978); A Rose at Christmas for unaccompanied voices (1992).
