Matthews, David

Matthews, David (1943– )

English composer. He is the brother of Colin Matthews, with whom he collaborated, with Deryck Cooke, on the performing version of Mahler's tenth symphony. He graduated in Classics from Nottingham University, and worked as an assistant to Benjamin Britten 1966–69. He published a biography of Tippett in 1980.

three songs for soprano and orchestra (1971).

six string quartets (1970–90), Songs and Dances of Mourning for cello (1976), clarinet quartet (1984), Variations for Strings (1986), Cantiga for soprano and ensemble (1988).
