Matthews, Denis

Matthews, Denis (1919–1988)

English pianist and writer on music. He studied with Harold Craxton and William Alwyn at the Royal Academy of Music, London, making his concert debut in 1939. He travelled widely and was especially noted for his playing of Mozart. From 1971 to 1984 he was professor of music at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and in 1985 published Beethoven in the Master Musicians series. He was awarded the CBE in 1975.
