Matthus, Siegfried (1934- )

German composer. His music is in a conservative idiom and includes the operas Der letzte Schuss (1967), Noch ein Löffel Gift, Liebling? (1972), Omphale (1976), Judith (1984), Die Weise von Liebe des Cornets Christoph Rilke (1984), Graf Mirabeau (1988), and Desdemona und ihrer Schwestern (1992).

He studied in East Berlin during the 1950s, with Wagner-Régeny and Hanns Eisler. In 1964 he was appointed composer-in-residence at the Komische Oper Berlin.

Orchestral

three symphonies (1969, 1976, 1993), concerto for orchestra (1963), concertos for violin (1968), piano (1970), cello (1975), flute (1978), oboe (1985), and triangle (1985).

Vocal

Vocal Symphony for soprano, baritone, two choruses, and orchestra (1967), Holofernes Portrait for baritone and orchestra (1981).

Chamber

Wem ich zu gefallen suche for tenor, baritone, and piano (1987); two octets (1970, 1989), string quartet (1972).
