Mattoon

City and seat of Coles County, east-central Illinois, 16 km/10 mi west of Charleston; population (2000) 18,300.

Mattoon was founded in 1854 at a junction of the Illinois Central and New York Central railways. It developed as a transportation hub and agricultural processing centre. The discovery of oil in the area in 1940 stimulated industrial expansion. Today, Mattoon's manufactures include photographic lamps, brass fittings, clothing, and road-building equipment. Lake Land College (founded 1966) is situated 8 km/5 mi to the south of the city. The Shelbyville Wildlife Management Area is 16 km/10 mi to the northwest, while Lake Mattoon lies 13 km/8 mi southwest.
