Maubeuge

French town in the département of Nord, on the River Sambre near the Belgian frontier; population (1990) 35,200. It has steel and engineering works, and manufactures mirrors. Maubeuge was fortified in the 17th century by the military engineer Vauban. It was besieged by German troops in 1870 in the Franco-Prussian War, and was the scene of heavy fighting in both world wars.
