Mauceri, John

Mauceri, John (1945– )

US conductor. He studied at Yale and Tanglewood. He gave the European premiere of Bernstein's Mass in Vienna in 1973. His opera debuts were in 1974 (UK opera debut, with Don Carlos for Welsh National Opera); 1976 (Metropolitan Opera House, New York with Fidelio); and 1983 (English National Opera, with La forza del destino and Royal Opera (at Manchester) with Butterfly). He worked at New York City Opera 1977–82 and at the American Symphony Orchestra 1984–87. From 1987 to 1993 he was music director of Scottish Opera, where he led performances of the final version of Bernstein's Candide (1988), the first UK performance of Weill's Street Scene (1989), and his own revision of Blitzstein's Regina (1991). He also led Les Troyens in Glasgow and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. His recordings include Candide, On Your Toes, and My Fair Lady.
