Maumbury Rings

Prehistoric circular earthwork, just south of Dorchester, Dorset, England. Excavations 1908–13 revealed that the original structure was an earthen circle containing an interior ditch cut by shafts 10 m/33 ft deep. It dates from the late Neolithic (New Stone Age) or early Bronze Age (about 1800 BC).

In Roman times the earthwork was converted into an amphitheatre for the town of Durnovaria (Dorchester), probably during the early military occupation of the 1st century AD.
