Maumee

Alternative name for a member of the American Indian Miami people.

Maumee

City in Lucas County, northwestern Ohio; population (1990) 15,600. It is situated on the Maumee River, 11 km/7 mi southwest of Toledo.

Maumee was founded in 1817 on the site of Fort Miami (originally a British stronghold, but captured by the US during the War of 1812). Because the settlement stood at the point where the Ohio and Erie Canal met the Maumee River, it later became a bustling trade and commercial centre. Today its chief industry is grain storage, and limestone is quarried in the region. The historic sites of Fallen Timbers and Fort Meigs are in the vicinity.
