Maurepas, Jean Frederic Phelippeaux, comte de (1701–1781)

French statesman. In 1724 he became superintendent of the Marine. In 1749 he offended Mme de Pompadour by an epigram, and was banished from court. In 1774, on the accession of Louis XVI, he was recalled and made first minister.

He was born in Versailles. He succeeded his father as secretary of state of the king's household. During his tenure he remodelled the Marine department, and was a liberal patron of art and science.
