Maurice (c. 539–602)

Byzantine Emperor from 582. His reign was marked by a series of wars, against the Persians (ended in 591), in Spain, and in the Balkans (from 582). The expense of this continual warfare, combined with party strife in Constantinople, led to a revolution and his deposition by Phocas.

He succeeded Tiberius. He is considered one of the most able Byzantine Emperors, and even given his military situation he was able to reorganize the remaining Byzantine possessions in Italy and Africa. In Spain, however, Cordoba was finally lost (584). After the accession of Phocas a reign of terror and anarchy broke out.
