Mauve, Anton (1838–1888)

Dutch landscape painter. He painted grey, rainy country scenes with subdued harmonies of tone. He worked in The Hague, where Vincent van Gogh, his nephew, was briefly his pupil.

Mauve was born in Zaandam, North Holland. He was a friend of Josef Israëls and the Maris brothers and an admirer of the Barbizon School.
