Maverick County

Administrative district on the Rio Grande in southwestern Texas, area 3,315 sq km/1,280 sq mi, population (1990) 36,400. Its seat is at Eagle Pass.

Situated in the fertile Winter Garden area, Maverick County grows and processes spinach and other crops, and there is also sheep and goat farming and cattle ranching. Samuel Maverick, an early landowner in the locality whose herd was left unbranded (apparently by accident), gave his name to the county and, indeed, to the general term ‘maverick’.
