Mawlamyine

Port and capital of Mon state in southeast Myanmar, on the Salween estuary; population (2001 est) 360,400. The city lies on the Gulf of Martaban and is sheltered by Bilugyun Island. Industries include rice milling, the export of teak milled in the city, rice and tea are exported, and a solar-powered factory extracts salt from sea water.

Mawlamyine is linked by ferry to Martaban and from there by rail to Yangon. It is served by an airport. Moulmein College is linked to the Arts and Science University of Yangon. There is also a state college for teacher training.
