Mawson, Douglas (1882–1958)

Australian explorer who reached the magnetic South Pole on Shackleton's expedition of 1907–09. Knighted 1914.

Mawson led Antarctic expeditions 1911–14 and 1929–31. Australia's first permanent Antarctic base was named after him. He was professor of mineralogy at the University of Adelaide 1920–53.
