Maxentius, Marcus Aurelius Valerius

Roman emperor AD 306–312, son of the emperor Maximian. When his father and Diocletian abdicated 305, he was passed over in the division of the empire. But Maxentius seized Rome and was proclaimed emperor in Italy in 306. He defeated Galerius (emperor in the eastern provinces) in 307, and gained control of Africa and Spain. Constantine the Great, who became emperor in the western provinces in 307, invaded Italy and defeated and killed Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312.
