Maximus, Magnus Clemens (died AD 388)

Roman emperor from AD 383. Maximus, born in Spain, accompanied the emperor Theodosius I on several expeditions, and spent some years as a general in Britain. He was proclaimed emperor by the troops 383, and was acknowledged emperor in Gaul, Spain, and Britain when he defeated and killed the emperor Gratian in Gaul.

Maximus crossed the Alps 387, defeated Valentinian II, the emperor in Italy, and established himself in Milan; but he was defeated by Theodosius and was subsequently captured and killed at Aquileia, northern Italy.
