Maxwell, Donald (1948– )

Scottish baritone. He made his debut with Scottish Opera in Musgrave's Mary, Queen of Scots in 1977, and has sung with the company as Rossini's Figaro, Zurga, and Janáček's Forester. With the Welsh National Opera he has appeared as Iago, Renato, Rigoletto, and Don Carlo in Ernani. Following his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London in Sallinen's The King Goes Forth to France in 1987, he returned as Gunther in 1990. He sang Falstaff with the Welsh National Opera on tour to Paris, Tokyo, and Milan; the Dutchman and Scarpia with Opera North in 1989; and Wozzeck for the English National Opera in 1990. He is a versatile singing actor.
