Mayen

City in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, 30 km/19 mi west of Koblenz; population (1994) 202,400. It is the largest settlement in the remote and hilly Eifel region, which lies between the River Rhine and the German frontier with southern Belgium and Luxembourg. There are carpet and paper industries in the city.

Mayen dates from Roman times. It has an ancient fortress (now a museum) and a notable church.
