Mayfield

Village in East Sussex, England; population (2001) 3,600. In medieval times it was a market town; its 14th-century ‘Old Palace’ is now a convent school. Mayfield's church (13th–15th century) has Sussex ironwork grave slabs.

Mayfield

City and seat of Graves County, western Kentucky; population (1990) 9,900. The city is located on Mayfield Creek, 35 km/22 mi south of Paducah.

Mayfield was settled in 1823, and developed as a market town trading in tobacco and mules. With the arrival of the New Orleans & Ohio Railroad in 1854, it grew as a market for grain, livestock, and dark-leaf tobacco. The area is noted for its clay; manufactures include brick, furniture, and snuff.
