Mayow, John

Mayow, John (1641–1679)

English chemist and physiologist. He published Tractatus quinque medicophysici (1674), containing ‘De salnitro et spiritu nitro-aereo’, which developed a theory of combustion, important discoveries in pneumatic chemistry, and theories of respiration. On the recommendation of Robert Hooke he was elected FRS in 1678.

He was born in Bray, near Looe, Cornwall. He was educated at Wadham College, Oxford, and practised as a physician in Bath.
