Mayville

City in Traill County, eastern North Dakota; population (1990) 2,100. Mayville is situated on the Goose River, 80 km/50 mi north-northwest of Fargo.

Mayville was settled in 1881. Standing in the rich Red River Valley, it became a commercial centre for livestock, grain, and dairy goods. It is the site of Mayville State University (founded 1889) and the Goose River Heritage Center, a local history museum.
