Mazara del Vallo

Town in Trapani province, northwest Sicily, on the Mediterranean coast 40 km/25 mi south of Trapani, at the mouth of the River Mazara; population (1990 est) 49,300. It is a centre of wine production and fishing. Founded by the Phoenicians, it flourished under Selinus, Carthage, Rome, and the Arabs.
