Mazzinghi, Joseph (1765–1844)

English pianist of Italian descent. A pupil of J C Bach, he succeeded his father as organist of the Portuguese Chapel in London at the age of ten. He then studied further with Bertoni, Sacchini, and Anfossi during their stays in England and in 1784 became conductor and composer to the King's Theatre. He taught much and was music master to the Princess of Wales (later Queen Caroline).

Works

operas La bella Arsena (1795) and Il tesoro (1796); plays with music A Day in Turkey (1791), Paul and Virginia (with Reeve, after Saint-Pierre, 1800), The Wife of Two Husbands, The Exile, The Free Knights, and others; several ballets; mass for three voices; six hymns; many keyboard sonatas; glees, arias, songs.
