mbalax

Pop music of West Africa with polyrhythmic percussion and dramatic vocal harmonies. Evolving from the traditional rhythms of the Mandinka people, and absorbing a Cuban influence, it incorporated electric guitars and other Western instruments in the 1970s. The singer Youssou N'Dour made mbalax known outside Africa.
