McAllen

City in Hidalgo County, south Texas, just north of the Mexican border formed by the Rio Grande, 194 km/121 mi southeast of Laredo; population (1992) 90,250. It is a winter resort and processing centre for the region's sugar cane, grain, vegetables, cotton, and citrus fruit. Industries include oil refining, the manufacture of rubber products and medical equipment, and the processing of agricultural products from the Rio Grande Valley. It is a US port of entry for Mexicans, and many of the city's inhabitants are Spanish-speaking.

McAllen was founded in 1905 and incorporated as a city in 1927.
