McAuley, Catherine Elizabeth (1787–1841)

Irish educator and social reformer. In 1831, she founded the ‘Sisters of Mercy’, which grew into one of the largest orders of nuns in Ireland, and was dedicated to educating orphans and the poor.

McAuley was born in Dublin and brought up by Protestant foster parents. With their legacy, she bought a site for a school for poor children and a residence for working women, which was named ‘House of Our Blessed Lady of Mercy’. The order she founded later established a house in London.
