McBride, Willie John

McBride, Willie John (1940– )

Irish rugby union player. Born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, he played as lock forward for the Ballymena club. He was capped 63 times by Ireland, and won a record 17 British Lions caps. McBride played on five Lions tours, in 1962, 1966, 1968, 1971, and in 1974 as captain when they returned from South Africa undefeated. He also managed the 1983 tour to New Zealand.
