McCall, Samuel Walker

McCall, Samuel Walker (1851-1923)

US politician. He was an attorney in Boston, Massachusetts (1875-92). He served that state as a Republican in the US House of Representatives (1893-1913). Politically independent, he opposed the annexation of the Philippines and spoke against increased federal power during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency. He ran for senator and was governor of Massachusetts (1916-18). Author of political biographies, he lectured about government at Ivy League colleges (1902-15). McCall was born in East Providence, Pennsylvania. He was educated at Dartmouth College.
