McCook

City and seat of Red Willow County, in southwest Nebraska; population (2000) 8,000. McCook is on the Republican River, 104 km/65 mi south of North Platte and 21 km/13 mi north of the Kansas state line.

McCook was founded as Fairview in 1881. Its name was changed when the railway arrived in the following year. The city continues to be a key railway town and processing centre for grain, livestock, and dairy producers. A long-time resident of the city was the influential Senator George W Norris (1861–1944), who was born in Ohio but moved to the McCook area in the 1880s.
