McCoy, Tony (1974– )

Northern Irish National Hunt jockey. In April 2002 he broke Gordon Richard's all-time record of riding 269 winners in a British jumps season, setting a new mark of 289 winners. In the 1999–2000 season he became the first jockey in British National Hunt racing to repeat the feat of riding over 200 winners in a season.

Born in County Antrim, the son of a horse breeder, he came to the UK in 1994 and in his first season was the leading conditional jockey with a record 74 winners. From the following year he was champion jockey for thirteen consecutive seasons, finishing with totals of 175, 190, 253, 186, 245, 191, 289, 256, 209, 200, 178, 184, and 140 winners respectively. In August 2002 McCoy rode his 1,700th winner, thereby surpassing Richard Dunwoody as Britain's most successful jump jockey ever.
