McCrory, John G(raham) (1860–1943)

US businessman. In 1882 he opened his first 5 & 10 cent store in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, and by 1901 he had 20 stores with annual sales of $498,000. He incorporated in 1915 with 118 stores. When he retired in 1933, there were 244 McCrory's in the eastern and southern states. Four months after he retired the company declared bankruptcy; by 1943 the chain had dwindled to 197 stores. McCrory was born in East Wheatfield Township, Pennsylvania.
