McDowell, Malcolm

    0.02 sec.

McDowell, Malcolm (1943– )

English actor. Known for his portrayal of cruel, violent characters, he played the rebellious hero in Lindsay Anderson's film If… (1968) and confirmed his acting abilities in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971). Other films include O Lucky Man! (1973), The Player (1992), Star Trek: Generations (1994), Between Strangers (2002), and The Company (2003).

He has worked widely in television, featuring in the UK miniseries Our Friends in the North (1996) and Fantasy Island (1998). Other films include Caligula (1979), Blue Thunder (1983), Jezebel's Kiss (1990), Chain of Desire (1992), Mr Magoo (1997), and Beings and World of Moss (both 1998).

Having made his screen debut in the television series Sat'day While Sunday (1966), McDowell's early film roles ranged from youthful rebellion in If… to outright psychosis in A Clockwork Orange. Forever associated with the menacing persona of the latter film, who revelled in his antisocial behaviour and constantly sought outlets for his brooding violence, he nevertheless went on to have a prolific and varied screen career.
