McDowell, Mary Eliza (1854-1936)

US social reformer. Educated in Illinois' public and private schools, she became a renowned public health reformer as director of the University of Chicago Settlement House (1894-1929). She also campaigned for women's rights, labour organizations, and interracial cooperation. McDowell was born in Cincinnati, Ohio.
