McDowell Mountains

Mountain range in central Arizona. The McDowell Mountains run northwest–southeast for some 19 km/12 mi and have their highest point at McDowell Peak (1,255 m/4,116 ft), 24 km/15 mi northeast of Scottsdale.

The McDowell range also includes Thompson Peak (1,213 m/3,980 ft), site of a radio station; Tom's Thumb, a popular rock climbing location; and an important ancient settlement of the Hohokam near Pinnacle Peak, at their northern end. The mountains were named in honour of General Irvin McDowell (1818–85). In addition, a preserved military fort (built in 1865), a Mojave and Apache reservation (population (1990) 700), and a regional park in the area are all named after him.
