McDuffie County

Administrative district of eastern Georgia; area 663 sq km/256 sq mi, population (1990) 20,100. The county lies on the western fringe of the area around Augusta. The city of Thomson (population 6,900) is the county seat.

On the southeastern edge of McDuffie Coiunty lies Fort Gordon. The populist leader and US senator Thomas Edward Watson, who was known as ‘the Sage of McDuffie’, was born in this agricultural county in 1856.
