McEnroe, John Patrick (1959- )

US tennis player whose brash behaviour and fiery temper on court dominated the men's game in the early 1980s. He was three times winner of Wimbledon in 1981 and 1983-84. He also won three successive US Open titles 1979-81 and again in 1984. A fine doubles player, McEnroe also won ten Grand Slam doubles titles, seven in partnership with Peter Fleming. After his retirement, he became a tennis commentator for television, with his notoriously outspoken remarks proving very popular among viewers in both the USA and the UK.
