McEnroe, John Patrick (1959– )

US tennis player whose brash behaviour and fiery temper on court dominated the men's game in the early 1980s. He was three times winner of Wimbledon in 1981 and 1983–84. He also won three successive US Open titles 1979–81 and again in 1984. A fine doubles player, McEnroe also won ten Grand Slam doubles titles, seven in partnership with Peter Fleming. From 1980–1985, he was the number one ranked player in the world on 14 separate occasions. After his retirement, he became a tennis commentator for television, with his notoriously outspoken remarks proving very popular among viewers in both the USA and the UK.
