McEvoy, (Arthur) Ambrose (1878–1927)

Irish painter, a contemporary of John and Augustus at the Slade School. He began as a painter of restful interiors and poetic landscapes, then moved to interiors with figures and portraits, being especially noted for portraits of women. He later became successful as a portrait painter of fashionable society. The Earring 1911 (Tate Gallery, London) is a characteristic figure painting.
