McEwan, Ian

McEwan, Ian (Russell) (1948– )

English novelist and short-story writer. His works often have sinister or macabre undertones and contain elements of violence and sexuality, as in the short-story collections First Love, Last Rites (1975) and In Between the Sheets (1978). His novel Amsterdam was awarded the 1998 Booker Prize for Fiction.

His other novels include The Comfort of Strangers (1981), The Child in Time (1987), Black Dogs (1992; shortlisted for the Booker Prize), Enduring Love (1997), Atonement (2001; shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Whitbread Award), Saturday (2005), and On Chesil Beach (2007). The Daydreamer (1994) is a novel for children. He has also published Short Stories (1995).
