McGeechan, Ian Robert (1946– )

Scottish rugby union player and coach. At fly-half or centre he won 32 Scotland caps and eight for the British Lions 1972–79. Appointed Scotland's head coach in 1988 he masterminded the team's Five Nations Grand Slam in 1990. He coached the British Lions in Australia in 1989, in New Zealand in 1993, and most notably in South Africa in 1997 when he guided the team to a memorable series victory. He coached Scotland for a second time 1992–2003, guiding them to the Five Nations title in 1999, and in 2005 became Director of Rugby at London Wasps.
