McGegan, Nicholas (1950– )

English conductor and keyboard player. He studied piano and baroque flute at Trinity College of Music, London. He was professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London 1973–79 and director of early music there 1976–80; artist-in-residence at Washington University, St Louis, 1979–84; music director of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra at San Francisco from 1985; and music director of the Göttingen Handel Festival from 1991. He has conducted Handel's Teseo (Boston, 1985), Ariodante (Santa Fe, 1986 and for English National Opera ensemble, 1993), Giustino (San Francisco, 1989), and L'Allegro (Brooklyn Academy, 1990). He also led the US premiere of Landi's Il Sant Alessio (Los Angeles, 1988), Monteverdi's Poppea (for Washington Opera), and Ulisse (for Long Beach Opera. Agrippina (Washington, 1992), La Clemenza di Tito (Scottish Opera, 1991). His recordings include a Messiah, with all Handel's alternative arias.
