McGrath, John Peter (1935–2002)

Scottish dramatist, director, and producer. He founded the socialist 7:84 Theatre Companies in England in 1971 and in Scotland in 1973, and is the author of such plays as Events While Guarding the Bofors Gun (1966); The Cheviot, the Stag, and the Black, Black Oil (1973), a musical account of the economic exploitation of the Scottish highlands; and The Garden of England (1985).

McGrath published two books arguing the case for popular and radical theatre: A Good Night Out (1981) and The Bone Won't Break (1990). He wrote and directed several early episodes of the 1960s hit television police series Z-Cars.
