McGraw, John Joseph

McGraw, John Joseph (1873–1934)

US baseball manager. He became player-manager of the New York Giants 1902, and in this dual capacity led the team to two National League pennants and a World Series championship. After retiring as a player 1906, he managed the Giants to eight more pennants and two world championships.

Born in Truxton, New York, McGraw began his career 1891 as an infielder with the Baltimore Orioles, which joined the National League 1892, becoming the team's manager 1899.

He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame 1937.
