McHenry County

Administrative district of northeastern Illinois; area 1,570 sq km/606 sq mi, population (1990) 183,200. Its northern border is coextensive with the Wisconsin state line. The county seat, at Woodstock, lies partly within the Chicago metropolitan area.

The Fox River flows out of Pistakee Lake through the eastern part of part of McHenry County. It is here that large numbers of people who have deserted the urban environment of Chicago have established communities such as Barrington Hills, Algonquin, Crystal Lake, and McHenry. Dairy and vegetable farms dominate the west of the county.
