McKeesport

City in Allegheny County, southwest Pennsylvania; population (1990) 26,000. McKeesport is part of the industrial complex around Pittsburgh. Its manufactures include steel products, auto bodies, and tools and dies. A branch of Pennsylvania State University is here.

It was settled in 1755 by David McKee, who operated a ferry here from 1769. The town developed in the 18th century as a fitting-out point for migrants embarking on the Ohio River for the west. Since the 1980s, the decline of the steel industry has contributed to mass unemployment. McKeesport was a centre of the Whiskey Rebellion (1794).
