McLaughlin, Marie (1954– )

Scottish soprano. She studied in Glasgow and at the London Opera Centre, from 1977. She made her debut at Aldeburgh in 1978, as Tatiana and appeared with the English National Opera ensemble from 1978 (in The Consul and Rigoletto) and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Barbarina (her debut role, in 1981), Susanna ( a role she repeated under James Levine at Salzburg in 1987), Zerlina, Iris (Semele), Nannetta, and Britten's Tytania. Other roles include Micaela and Violetta (Glyndebourne 1985 and 1987); Marzelline in Fidelio (Metropolitan Opera House, New York, 1986); Despina (Geneva, 1992); Jenny in Mahogonny; and Ilia in Idomeneo (Rome, 1982, and Barcelona, 1993).
