McLuhan, (Herbert) Marshall (1911–1980)

Canadian theorist of communication who emphasized the effects of technology on modern society. He coined the phrase ‘the medium is the message’, meaning that the form rather than the content of information has become crucial. His works include The Gutenberg Galaxy (1962) – in which he coined the phrase ‘the global village’ for the worldwide electronic society then emerging; Understanding Media (1964); and The Medium is the Massage (sic, 1967).
