McManus, Francis Patrick Vincent

    0.01 sec.

McManus, Francis Patrick Vincent (1905–1983)

Australian politician. He was deputy leader of the Australian Labor party in the Senate (1956–57), before founding the left-wing Democratic Labor (DLP) party in 1957. McManus was a DLP senator in Victoria in 1957–62 and 1965–73.

He was born in Melbourne, Victoria. Before he entered politics he was a teacher. He was elected to the Victorian Senate in 1955, defeated in 1961, and re-elected in 1964. The Democratic Labor party gained few parliamentary seats, but attracted enough support to lessen the chances of Labor winning federal office.
