McNary, Charles

McNary, Charles (Linza) (1874–1944)

US politician. A Republican serving Oregon, he was originally appointed and then elected to the US Senate (1917–44), where he prompted legislation involving agriculture, reforestation, irrigation, and hydroelectric power. As Senate minority leader, he opposed some of President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal measures, but supported others such as Social Security. He was Wendell Wilkie's vice-presidential running mate in 1940. McNary was born near Salem, Oregon.
