McNary, Charles (Linza) (1874-1944)

US politician. A Republican serving Oregon, he was originally appointed and then elected to the US Senate (1917-44), where he prompted legislation involving agriculture, reforestation, irrigation, and hydroelectric power. As Senate minority leader, he opposed some of President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal measures, but supported others such as Social Security. He was Wendell Wilkie's vice-presidential running mate in 1940. McNary was born near Salem, Oregon.
